Sabi Sands Predators Safari Tour
28 September – 8 October 2017
White lions and white rhinos in South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary
$6,995 (€ 6,530) PP
Escape the maddening summer heat in the United States and join me in South Africa to photograph Leopards, Lions and Cheetahs. You will also find Elephants, Zebras, Giraffe, Warthogs, the now endangered Rhinoceros side by side with scores of antelope and other wildlife gems. This tour is for photographers of all skill levels. The techniques you learn from me can be put into practice and immediately experienced in the field. In addition to the technical knowledge, you will gain a greater appreciation for, and understanding of, the majestic animals you encounter.

Having spent several weeks in the South African bush with Ed on his tour last year, I can say he is extremely knowledgeable about the country and the wildlife. After finding out he grew up in South Africa, it is easy to understand why he knows the landscape and customs of the diverse areas of the country so well. He was an excellent guide and was able to work with me to get the best images during the amazing trip. Peter G
The first night at OR Tambo
After arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you will be transferred to the Mondior Hotel at the Emperor’s Palace adjacent to the Airport for the first night. The 4-star Peermont Mondior hotel at Emperors Palace features 150 spacious rooms and suites furnished in contemporary African elegance and fitted with cutting-edge technology, internet access and digital television. Every room sports tea and coffee facilities and a mini-bar with fridge. The hotel is conveniently located right next to O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Four nights in the Sabi Sands Area
Kirkman’s Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoiled wilderness, is regarded as one of the best-loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. It is a well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920’s, and celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead. The colonial ambience of gracious style and luxury has been retained, and guests step back in time upon entering the original homestead, which now houses the Lodge’s sitting, dining and bar areas.
Each of the guest cottages has a private veranda and is furnished in the same charming style with ensuite bathrooms. The large sitting room, with a 1920’s ambience, leads through double French doors onto rolling lawns that provide a velvety contrast to the wild and tumbling bush surrounding the Lodge. Breakfast and lunch are served on shady verandas, and dinners are shared in the dramatic boma or in romantic lantern-lit bush settings. After our early morning drive, we return to the Lodge for a breakfast at about 9am.
After four glorious days of wildlife sights and photography we move to another camp in the northern part of the Greater Kruger reserve, known as Timbavati. The 3 hour drive is spent partly in the reserve and partly on tarred roads. We spend four nights at Ngala Lodge.
Four nights in the Timbavati Area
Early breakfast at the Hotel is followed by an half hour drive in a comfortable passenger bus which gets us to Ngala Lodge, our home for the next four nights. This private Game Reserve shares an unfenced boundary with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary and one of the biggest nature reserves in the world (encompassing 2 million hectares of wilderness). A spectacular diversity of wildlife moves through this immense wilderness – elephant, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe, buffalo and white rhino.
Nestled under a canopy of mopane and tamboti trees, Ngala Safari Lodge at the Ngala Private Game Reserve features classic thatched cottages. Hearty breakfasts and delicious lunches are served in the dappled shade of an enormous weeping boerbeantree. Upon your return from exhilarating evening game drives, you are welcomed by Ngala’s warm, hospitable staff to a banquet in the elegant candlelit courtyard, or to an African feast around the blazing boma fire. The Lodge’s thatched dining, bar and sitting areas are open to the warm breezes of the inviting African bushveld.
After four glorious days of wildlife sights and photography we say our goodbye’s and start heading home. We are transferred to the Ngala airstrip and a chartered flight to Johannesburg International Airport. Each guest then returns home or embarks on other travels in the country as privately arranged.
Guests fly into Johannesburg International Airport and spend the first night at the Mondior Airport hotel.
This morning we take a bus to the Federal Air terminal for a flight direct to the Skukuza Airport. After the transfer to Kirkman’s Kamp, taking fifteen minutes, we check-in and prepare for the afternoon game drive. The drive leaves at about 15:00 and is preceded by a light snack. We return to the Lodge at about 19:00 for a relaxing drink followed by dinner at 19:30.

We return to the Kamp at sunset, around 19:00, for a relaxing drink followed by dinner at 19:30. Times given are indicative – interesting animal sightings may alter the schedule.
After our early morning drive, we return to the Kamp for a breakfast at about 09:00. We check-out and take a road trip to Ngala Lodge which takes about 2 hours. This is a great opportunity for you to take pictures of the environment and observe animals in the wild. Most travelling is undertaken in air-conditioned vehicles but some images are best taken away from the vehicle and involve moderate walking. Climbing the dunes is optional – you should be able to climb into and out of a safari vehicle and walk unaided for short distances. Guests must complete a standard liability waiver before participating in this safari.
This safari tour visits two luxurious and well appointed lodges, one located just south of the Sand River in the lower concession area alongside the world renowned Kruger Park and the other in the central concession area. The safari departs from Johannesburg International airport (OR Tambo) to Skukuza International airport on a commercial flight and returns to OR Tambo from Hoedspruit airport on a chartered flight. The transfer between the lodges involves quite a bit of travel by road – about a 3 hour drive – in an air conditioned vehicle f0r the exclusive use of the tour group. This has been determined as the most convenient and cost-effective manner to visit the region. Please note that minor changes to the itinerary and/or flight schedules may occur due to local conditions and to better accommodate our group. You will be informed, to the extent possible, in advance of any such changes.
Mandatory Medical Evacuation Insurance
Some of the areas we visit are wild and at a distance from major cities; it is a condition of this booking for guests to carry their own medical evacuation insurance. You will be asked to provide independent documentary evidence of such cover, failing which cover will be provided for you at your cost and added to your account.
Please provide the office with the insurance company’s name, contact number and your individual policy number. Thank you for understanding that this policy exists in the interest of our guests’ safety.
