OKAVANGO DELTA SAFARI

31 OCTOBER – 9 NOVEMBER 2020

10 DAY / 9 NIGHT WILDLIFE PHOTO SAFARI

I will lead a small group of photographers to Botswana's  Okavango Delta, one of the continent’s natural, unspoiled and sparsely populated parts of southern Africa for ten days to photograph panoramic landscapes with Elephants, Leopards, African Fish Eagles, Lechwe antelope and Wild Dogs.

We fly out from Johannesburg to Maun in Botswana, the gateway to western wildlife areas. Shortly thereafter, we head out to the South West part of the delta into Nxabega by charter flight and use land and water craft to explore the unspoiled habitat. The maze of channels, lined by reeds and surrounded by wetlands, support herds of elephant and buffalo. The open flat marshy wetlands, untainted by human settlements, provide unparalleled panoramic vistas of a place in Africa where animals roam unperturbed. After four nights we fly to Xaranna for four nights. This camp offers excellent game viewing and includes Hippo, Elephant, Lion, Reedbuck and the perennial Impala. This is a ‘mostly’ land camp on the Delta which consistently provides, probably, the best game viewing in the whole of Delta.

The homeward bound journey starts first on a charter flight to Maun, Botswana and then onto Johannesburg International from where each guest heads back to their destination that same evening

Every day was a new surprise – African Wild Dogs, African Fish Eagles, Leopards catching fish – mixed in with Ed’s knowledge and enthusiasm for conservation made this trip a real adventure. I will always remember the wide open marsh with elephants all around the vehicles.

ITINERARY

31 October 2020

The first night at OR Tambo
After arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, you will be transferred to the Mondior Hotel at the Emperor’s Palace adjacent to the Airport for the first night. The 4-star Peermont Mondior hotel at Emperors Palace features 150 spacious rooms and suites furnished in contemporary African elegance and fitted with cutting-edge technology, internet access and digital television. Every room sports tea and coffee facilities and a mini-bar with fridge. The hotel is conveniently located right next to O.R. Tambo International Airport.

1 - 4 November 2020

Head north to Maun, Bostwana
The next morning an early flight takes us from OR Tambo to Maun in Botswana, a flight that should take just over an hour. In Maun we board a local charter flight to take us to Nxabega Airstrip. The direct flight takes about 45 mins and a 20 minute drive on a safari vehicle gets us to Nxabega, our home for the next four nights. On arrival we will checkin, have a light meal and prepare to head out on our first safari in Botswana.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp is located on the edge of the Okavango Delta in a 7,000 hectare exclusive wildlife concession bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

Each morning at sunrise, after a coffee and a rusk, we head out to search the wide plains for cats and elephants. We break mid-morning for some warm drinks in the open plains, after which we seek carmine bee eaters, lilac breasted rollers, and malachite kingfishers. We return to camp for a warm breakfast and to marvel on the images taken during the outing. Time is allocated for guests to review their images and ask questions about how to improve the images during the morning until early afternoon. Before heading out for the afternoon drive, we have a quick, light snack and set about getting more fantastic images on the waterways either by motor boat or mokoro (pole canoe). At sunset we return for pre-dinner drinks and dinner followed by an early evening to re-charge our batteries.

On the last day of our stay at Nxabega, after breakfast we head out to the local airstrip for a short 30 mins flight to Xaranna Delta Camp.

5 - 8 November 2020

Four nights at Xaranna
Blending seamlessly with its surroundings, the tranquil beauty of Xaranna surprises both guests and occasional wandering animals, startled as rough wooden beams and thatched roofs take shape within leafy groves. The sounds of Africa lull and soothe as elephants splash in the waters, baboons chatter and birds call in the trees.

While lion are commonly encountered near Xaranna, they are not the only predator found in the area. Although predominantly nocturnal and difficult to spot, leopards are fairly common throughout the Okavango, particularly in dense riverine forest. Apart from the more commonly encountered predators, the Okavango is also a stronghold for the endangered African wild dog, although sightings of this rare animal are relatively uncommon. Exhibiting a fascinating social structure, wild dog live in packs led by a dominant pair with a strict social hierarchy.

One of the most common antelope in the Okavango, the red lechwe is especially adapted for the swampy conditions. Its splayed, elongated hooves give it a sure footing in muddy conditions, allowing it to inhabit the outskirts of the permanent swamps. One of its most sought after species is the huge but elusive Pel’s fishing owl, which roosts in the densest evergreen thickets. A quintessential African sound, the haunting call of the African Fish Eagle can be heard echoing over the channels.

9 November 2020

On the last day, after breakfast we head out to the local airstrip for a short 20 mins flight from the Xaranna Delta Camp. to Maun. The direct flight to Johannesburg International Airport from Maun leaves at about 14:00 and will be in Johannesburg by 15:30. International departures can be arranged to leave that evening heading home or to another customized trip extension.

SOUTH LUANGWA SAFARI

14 – 24 OCTOBER 2020

11 DAY / 10 NIGHT wILDLIFE pHOTO sAFARI

The South Luangwa National Park, located on the eastern side of Zambia between the Murchison escarpment on the west and the Luangwa River on the east, marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. This is one of the last remaining unspoiled wilderness areas in Africa and home to this photo safari for 10 nights.

The simple authentic Kuyenda is set beneath shady trees by the Manzi River. Here, you hardly need look for it as it will come to you. Settle down in the lounge and look out over the rippling grasses of the neighboring plain where the drama of the African wilderness is played out each day. The second camp, the seductive Bilimungwe camp feels like it has grown organically out of the surrounding landscape. Set beneath a huge mahogany tree, the heart of Bilimungwe is the cool, shady lounge area that looks out over one of the camp’s three waterholes.

You’re never far away from the meandering Luangwa river, with pools of water, ox-bow lakes and dead-end tributaries, And it is in these pools of water, during the dry season, that we find stunning wildlife. The national park is home to large populations of leopards, elephants, buffalo, hippopotamus, lions and giraffe. Birds are also a major attraction in Luangwa with over 400 species recorded. One of the highlights is the birding experience - thousands of nesting bee eaters - and large birds feeding on the fish in drying pools. In short it’s an amazing experience that you just have to participate in.

DESERT & DUNES WORKSHOP

12 – 24 APRIL 2020

13 DAY / 12 NIGHT LANDSCAPE AND WILDLIFE WORKSHOP

Namibia is a vast country, even by African standards, covering an area approximately four times the size of the United Kingdom but with a population of a mere 2.6 million – one of the lowest densities in the world. It is also an ‘ageless land’; visible through a heritage of rock art created by stone-age artists and geological attractions such as the Organ Pipes and the Erongo Mountains. Added to the space and silence, these all contribute to a feeling of antiquity, solitude and wilderness.

The climate is typical of a semi-desert country. Days are warm to hot and nights are generally cool. Temperatures are modified by the high plateau in the interior and by the cold Benguela current that runs along the Atlantic coastline on the west of the country. Except for the first few months of the year, the country is generally dry with very little rain. We will have our own professional and experienced safari guide who will enhance our enjoyment of this unique country by making it a fascinating and stress-free journey of discovery amidst very dramatic scenery. The knowledge, experience and attitude of our guides are critical to a successful safari – they are both personable and very professional.

This workshop is for you if you are looking for multiple photographic opportunities in a deserted and dramatic environment. It is a safe, carefree naturally beautiful space where you will feel at ease when doing what you really enjoy - making fantastic images!

Along the way you will be treated to an exciting 4x4 excursion with your guide along the ephemeral river valleys to explore this remarkable region and to search for game, including the elusive desert adapted elephants, if they are in the area. Damaraland is home to a variety of desert adapted wildlife and hidden desert treasures. As the elephants are mostly active in the mornings you will normally have the best chance to see them then. You continue to Grootberg Lodge, for your overnight stay.  Should time permit, you embark on a scheduled scenic sundowner drive on top of the Etendeka Plateau with a lodge guide.

You may have to search for a while as the semi-nomadic Himba people sometimes move location with no notice. They are one of the last truly traditional peoples of Namibia and have little time for conventional practices. Here you will learn about the customs and traditions of this very proud nation, and will be given insight into their beliefs, way of life and everyday routine. You also have the opportunity to explore wildlife, if they are in the area around Sesfontein. Lunch is enjoyed at a scenic location, and you will also have the opportunity to stop for picturesque photo shoots along the way. Day 7 & 8 (18-19 April 2020)

Sossusvlei / Namib Desert

Today and tomorrow are dedicated to exploring this remarkable area with your guide, rising early to make your way into the heart of the Namib Naukluft National Park for magical excursions into the dune fields. As you are already inside the park you can get into Sossusvlei before everyone else and you would even be able to get there in time to see the sun rise to capture the dunes whilst the light is soft and shadows accentuate their towering shapes and curves, if you are prepared to get up early enough. This area boasts some of the highest free-standing sand dunes in the world. Your guide will give you an insight on the formation of the Namib Desert and its myriad of fascinating creatures and plants that have adapted to survive these harsh environs. Once you have explored the dune fields to your heart’s content you can enjoy a relaxed picnic breakfast in the shade of a camel thorn tree. You then return to Sossus Dune Lodge in the early afternoon for lunch, stopping off to view Sesriem Canyon (if you haven’t already done so the day before). The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure (from experience, this is usually welcomed after an exhilarating morning in the dunes), although some avid photographers may wish to return to the dunes for more photographic opportunities in the late afternoon. (B,L,D)

NOTE: Options to consider during your stay at the Sossus Dune Lodge:

  1. include a sunrise balloon flight over the Namib Naukluft National Park (optional extra at your cost)

  2. embark on one scenic helicopter flight (included in the workshop fee) over Sossusvlei and surrounding dune fields. Recommended either at dawn or dusk for the best light over the dunes.

Day 9 (20 April 2020)

Sossusvlei Area to Lüderitz

Today’s journey takes you further south and through the spectacular scenery of the Tiras Mountain Conservancy to reach the wind-swept coastal town of Lüderitz, keeping a lookout for the legendary feral desert horses along the way. In the late afternoon your guide will arrange for you to visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop where you will have the opportunity to explore the desolate streets and abandoned buildings and photograph this fascinating site before returning to Lüderitz for dinner with your guide at one of the popular restaurants in Lüderitz which specializes in fresh seafood. (B,L,D)

Day 10 (21 April 2020)

Elizabeth Bay / Kolmanskop

Today you will be treated to a fascinating excursion into the Sperrgebiet restricted area to visit the historic sights of Elizabeth Bay and Kolmanskop. The guided tour will give you an insight into the rich history of diamond mining in Namibia and the rise and fall of both Elizabeth Bay and Kolmanskop, as well as an idea of what everyday life in these settlements would have been like. Today the ghost towns’ crumbling ruins bear little resemblance to their former glory. The stately homes, their grandeur now scoured and demolished by the wind, is gradually becoming sand. In 1980 the mining company CDM restored a number of the buildings in Kolmanskop and established a museum for tourist viewing. After your guided excursion there will be time to wander around the desolate streets and abandoned buildings before returning to Lüderitz and heading out to dinner with your guide to a popular restaurant in town. (B,L,D)

Day 11 (22 April 2020)

Lüderitz to the Keetmanshoop Area

It’s up early this morning for one last excursion to Kolmanskop. The aim is to reach Kolmanskop early enough to set up your equipment in time to see the sun rise and to capture the dunes and remnants of yesteryear at best light whilst the light is soft and shadows accentuate their eerie shapes and curves. You then make your way east and inland to reach the Quivertree Forest Rest Camp on the outskirts of Keetmanshoop, enjoying a picnic lunch at a scenic location along the way. From here you will have the perfect base from which to photograph Quiver Trees at different light intensities, including night photography. (B,L,D)

Our ranger was the best – knowledgeable and with a keen sense of what the animals were likely to do next. At times, we were so close to the animals that we could hear them breathe! Ed was able to hold a conversation, recommend photographic settings and image composition. And he would spot animals in the bush all at the same time.
